Participation in the Hands Across the Sand

Event on Holden Beach, Oak Island, Ocean Isle

Beach, and Sunset Beach on May 19, 2018

Despite intermittent teeming thunderstorms, Brunswick County residents turned out for the annual Hands Across the Sand event held this year at Holden Beach, Oak Island, Ocean Isle Beach, and Sunset Beach. The events involve participants holding hands and stretching across the beach sands to express support for our coast and opposition to harmful seismic blasting and to risky and dangerous offshore drilling for oil and gas.

Special thanks to Vicki Sturgill, Regional Coordinator of the events for helping to show that Brunswick County actually does care about the ocean, our coast, our coastal communities, our marine animals, and our future! BEAT President Pete Key and BEAT Legislative Director Dwight Willis provided leadership for two of the gatherings, and, of course, BEAT members supported the event.

Special thanks also to the organizations that sponsored this year's event: Sierra Club, Oceana, Surfrider Foundation, Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, Earth Ethics, Friends of the Earth, Gulf Restoration Network, Chart 411 and Urban Paradise Guild.
